Estrada dos Moleiros

Pelo menos esse é o nome que eu antes lhe dei por não saber o nome verdadeiro (Estrada da Ribeira). O que eu sei é que esta estrada rural me levou a visitar o Bairro dos Moleiros, um grupo de casas e azenhas abandonadas junto á Ribeira de Beijós. A beleza do local levou-me tirar muitas fotografias que irei usar no futuro para guiar um pincel. Agradeço ao Willoughby e a CPM pelas direcções.

At least that is the name I gave this back road, not knowing its true name. It took me to a beautiful abandoned neighborhood of old farm houses and water mills. I took many photos and I want to use some of them to guide a paintbrush. I thank Willoughby and CPM for the directions.

Bem, espero usar o meu tempo livre neste longo fim de semana do feriado de Acção de Graças para poder pintar mais umas cenas da minha ultima visita em Setembro.

Castelo de Óbidos

Óbidos é difícil de descrever sem a tentação de usar hipérbole. A vila parece quase demasiado perfeita para os sentidos. Este castelo domina o conjunto de casas tradicionais belamente caiadas e devidamente protegidas pela tão bem preservada muralha medieval.

Óbidos is difficult to describe without the temptation to use hiperbole. The village almost seems too perfect for the senses. This castle towers over the traditional whitewashed houses huddling within the well preserved medieval walls.

O meu novo Moleskine!

Recentemente o meu irmão enviou-me mais uma caixa cheia de coisas boas tais como bacalhau, chouriça, queijo da serra, etc…coisas que são impossíveis de encontrar aqui em Memphis. Como se isso não fosse suficiente, desta vez ele incluiu dois cadernos de desenho Moleskine, uma marca de longa e distinta tradição na Europa. Aqui ficam agradecimentos redrobrados.

Recently my dear brother sent me another care package bursting with good portuguese treats like Bacalhau (dried cod fish), Portuguese sausage, goat cheese etc…stuff I can’t find here in Memphis. As if this was not enough, this time he included two Moleskine sketchbooks which have a long and distinguished tradition in Europe. My great thanks for this great gift.

Lugar de Além, Beijós

O Lugar de Além é um bairro da Aldeia de Beijós na Beira Alta, a sede da Freguesia onde nasci. A aldeia fica localizada num vale muito fértil e vêem-se muitos campos cultivados. Esta é uma perspectiva que se pode apreciar vista do Alto da Cadina.

Guarda-Além is a neighborhood in the village of Beijós in Northern Portugal, near where I was born. It sits in a fertile valley with many farmed fields. This view is from Alto da Cadina.

Museu do Relógio, Serpa

Serpa, no Alentejo, é uma vila muito bem preservada que transborda de paz e tranquilidade. Para não falar da excelente cozinha local. Eu recomendo as Migas feitas com o bom pão alentejano e ervas aromáticas!

Serpa in the Province of Alentejo, is a beautifully preserved town that exudes peace and tranquility. Not to mention the great local food. I definitely recommend the “Migas”, a dish based on meat and crumbled bread with aromatic herbs.

Ermida, Alentejo

O Alentejo está salpicado de antigas ermidas que nasceram de ainda mais antigas mesquitas muçulmanas. Esta aguarela foi pintada para um dos meus bons amigos Portugueses e Alentejanos, aqui em Memphis (onde os Portugueses escassam).

The Province of Alentejo has many scattered Chapels that were converted from old Arab Mosques dating from hundreds of years ago when the Iberian Peninsula was occupied by the Moors. This was painted for a local Portuguese friend here in Memphis where you can count the Portuguese community with the fingers of your hand.

Almedina

Bem, esta é a segunda tentativa que faço para retratar esta cena na alta de Coimbra perto da Sé Velha. Não gosto de pintar a mesma coisa mais do que uma vez, mas como não fiquei lá muito satisfeito com a primeira, aqui está a segunda. Penso que ficou um pouco menos má.

This is my second try at this scene in Coimbra, my old college town. I don’t like to paint the same thing twice, but I was not too happy with the first try. I like this a one a little better.

Póvoa

Ah… de volta ás minhas orígens, á minha infância! Esta vetusta casa na Póvoa da Pégada data do Século XVIII e eu tive o grande previlégio de lá ter vivido a minha juventude. Na “Regada” regava o milho e queixava-me da pele queimada não só pelas folhas dessa planta mas também pelas folhas das abóboras que mais abrasivas eram ainda. No entanto, este lugar era o centro do mundo para mim e era o único lugar onde encontrava a paz interior. A velha oliveira sucumbiu á nova estrada. Mas encontrei a Casa belamente restaurada e espero voltar a vê-la no próximo ano.

Ah…back to my origins, to my childhood! This old house dates from the Eighteenth Century and I was previleged to have grown up here. I used to water the corn and complain about the skin rashes from that plant, but especially from the pumpkin plants scattered in the middle. Nevertheless, this was the center of my world, the only place where I would find inner peace. The old olive tree is gone, a victim of the new road. But I found the House beautifully restored, and I hope to come by again next year.

Por vezes, no meu esforço para eliminar detalhes eu tento pintar muito rápidamente, quase a contra-relógio. E uma vez por outra dá bom resultado. Desta vez…não deu. De qualquer maneira aqui fica para interesse didáctico. Moral da história…rápido sim..mas não excesso de velocidade.

Sometimes I try to loosen up and eliminate detail by working very fast, against the clock.
Once in a while it works. Not this time…Anyway here it is for educational purposes. Moral of the story – rush – but not too much.

Quinta das Chãs

Há uns meses vi umas fotografias desta quinta no Beijós XXI e fiquei intrigado sobre este belo lugar. Afinal, fica bem perto de onde eu, enquanto adolescente, costumava caminhar com a minha fraca espingarda de ar comprimido na minha vã esperança de apanhar uns tordos no Outono (eu penso que me lembro de os ouvir rirem-se de mim…).
Bem, este Setembro tive a fortuna de poder caminhar por estas bandas de novo e não pude resistir a passar por este lugar cheio de paz e tranquilidade.

I recently saw a photo on a favorite site of this farm in Portugal and I was taken by the scene. Turns out it is near where I used to try…in vain…to hunt birds in my teenage years with my weak BB gun. I think I remember the birds laughing at me…
In any event, this September I was fortunate enough to walk these paths again and I could not resist to come by this quiet and peaceful place.

De volta á Realidade, Back to Reality

Bem, cá estamos de volta. Duas semanas no Paraíso pareceram dois minutos. No entanto tirei montes de fotos que em breve usarei para alimentar o meu passatempo. Até breve.

Well, here we are back to the routine. Two weeks in Paradise seemed like two minutes.
Nevertheless, I took mountains of photos that I will soon put to good use. Back soon.

Esta antiga casa, no extremo Norte da Póvoa da Pégada estava a ser recuperada com o bom gosto da Beira Alta quando eu visitei em 2004. Parece um Oásis entre os pinheiros, as oliveiras, e as aromáticas larangeiras.

This old house in Beira Alta, was being restored when I visited in 2004. A little Oasis among the pine forest, olive trees, and aromatic orange trees.

Algarve

Este é um pequeno recanto na Quinta do Lago, um grande empreendimento turístico no Algarve. Normalmente não gosto de céus muito homogéneos, prefiro representar nuvens ou outros efeitos atmosféricos. Desta vez não resisti ao típico céu de Verão em Portugal com o seu rico azul (azul “macio” como Eça de Queiróz o descreve).
Este trabalho vem de uma fotografia que lá tirei em 1995.

This scene is in Quinta do Lago, a big resort in Algarve, Southern Portugal. Normally I prefer more atmospheric effects in the sky as opposed to even tones. In this case, I gave in and just had to try to show the typical deep blue Portuguese summer sky (soft and velvety, as described by the late great Portuguese writer, Eça de Queiróz ).
This work is based on a photo I took there in 1995.
