O Alentejo está salpicado de antigas ermidas que nasceram de ainda mais antigas mesquitas muçulmanas. Esta aguarela foi pintada para um dos meus bons amigos Portugueses e Alentejanos, aqui em Memphis (onde os Portugueses escassam).******
The Province of Alentejo has many scattered Chapels that were converted from old Arab Mosques dating from hundreds of years ago when the Iberian Peninsula was occupied by the Moors. This was painted for a local Portuguese friend here in Memphis where you can count the Portuguese community with the fingers of your hand.

I happened to come across your beautiful aquarels; I really enjoyed them. 30 years ago I worked summers in Portugal, also in the Alentejo (Trindade and Albernoa), your paintings really convey the "genius loci" the feeling of the place. Makes me want to visit Portugal again. Thanks for sharing.

A Ermida da Srª dos Remédios, foi construida em cumprimento de uma promessa, consta nas Actas da CMS que uma confraria composta por alguns mordomos foi à Camara Municipal em 9 de Agosto de 1687 dizer que para se acabarem as obras da igreja (faltava a cobertura) ofereciam as folhadas das suas vinhas para que se vendessem e o dinheiro revertesse para o acabamento das obras.
ReplyDeleteAs obras form concluidas nos finais de 1689. A Festa realizava-se a 2 de Fevereito.
