Vila Nova de Milfontes


Esta vista de Vila Nova de Milfontes é dominada pelo Forte de São Clemente, também conhecido por Castelo de Milfontes.

  4. This beautiful castle at the waterfront makes escape easy by horse or water when being attacked. The boats you added to the water makes this painting very interesting.
    Is this beautiful castle converted into a restaurant or hotel today?

  5. Em 2007 fiz férias em Vila Nova de Mil Fontes. O Forte que se vê na imagem é deveras impressionante.
    Curiosamente é propriedade privada, coisa rara no nosso país para monumentos com esta dimensão.

  6. Thanks, Southern Jewel. Many old castles and monasteries in Portugal (also in Spain) have been converted into upscale Inns or "Pousadas" (Paradores in Spain). As far as I know, this has been very sucessfull at allowing the Portuguese Government to preserve these beautiful monuments while reducing taxpayer expense. However, I don't think this particular Fort is part of that program. In fact, as Rafael indicates, this is one rare case where the monument is privately owned. As long as it is well preserved and available to the public, I don't quibble...
