Ucanha
This quick sketch was made on my Moleskine sketchbook, with very smooth and sized paper which absorbs very little water. The paint coagulates on the surface forming unusual effects that I find appealing.

Uma Pedra Especial - A Special Rock
This rock has a special meaning to me and the people in the small village where I was born. The two small recesses look like they were left by someone’s feet. The legend goes that Our Lady Mary, while walking in these woods decided to use this rock to sit down and take a rest. Therefore the name of the village, Póvoa da Pégada. The word “Pégada” means “Track”.

Torre do Relógio
Chamemos-lhe a Torre do Relógio. Um apontamento duma visita em 2004.
I don’t quite know the name of this stone tower in the beautiful Village of Vidago. Let’s call it the Clock Tower.
From a visit in 2004.

Almedina
The Arch of Almedina in Coimbra is part of the old medieval walls and allows access to the higher reaches of the city. It is located just above Ferreira Borges Street.

Rio Mondego - Mondego River
I found these old and abandoned houses by the Mondego River near Carregal do Sal, Beira Alta. It was a great fishing day except no one caught a single fish. But the picnic and the company of family more than made up for it.

The estate of Vinha da Capela (literally “Chapel Vineyard”) in Beira Alta belonged to a good family friend, an attorney from Lisbon, José Videira. I do think however, that his true passion was painting. The house has been empty and abandoned for as long as I can remember. I remember visiting a few times as a child and marveling at the beautiful watercolors, oils and pencil drawings on the walls. I am sure this was the first experience that sparked my own interest in painting, watercolor especially.

Also known as the Santa Engrácia Church in Lisbon, this is the final resting place for many famous and beloved portuguese people such as presidents, writers, and more recently, the great fado singer Amália Rodrigues.

I came by this picturesque place in 2002. It is located in the Province of Beira Alta, near Oliveira do Hospital. The village setting, with its stone bridge and river beach is fantastic and I highly recommend a visit.

The few times I saw this castle was always a certain distance away because it sits in an islet in the middle of the great Tagus (Tejo) River. Maybe its arresting beauty can be better appreciated from a distance where it blends with the local landscape.

Several years ago I was lucky enough to visit the Island of Puerto Rico. This small watercolor shows the Point Higuero Light in the Northwest corner of the island.
