In the last few days I have been rummaging through my photos and I found the 2004 album when we took a drive around Northern Portugal. One of those pictures resulted in this “half-hour”.

Marialva
Tal como a vi em 2004. A aldeia assim como as magníficas ruínas medievais, fica perto de Meda, Beira Alta.

Terras do Demo
Da outra, a´ esquerda esquece-me o termo descritivo. Teria talvez algum significado religioso.
I found these granitic structures near the Shrine of Our Lady of Lapa, near Sernancelhe, Beira Alta. On the right, I recognize a pillory - used to punish people for petty crimes back then. On the left, the name escapes me. I think it had some kind of religious significance.

For a change there is no architecture here. Just a birch tree on a lake shore.

Foz do Dão II
When I do a detailed drawing in pencil or pen and ink, I usually preserve it in its original condition. Then, the next day, I have the urge to print a copy in watercolor paper and add a few watercolor washes. What can I say, I can’t help it.

Foz do Dão
The village of Foz do Dão (literally, the mouth of the River Dão) no longer exists. That is, its ruins are still there…under water. It was submerged in 1980 by the Aguieira Dam, two kilometers down the river.

Serra do Caramulo - Caramulo Mountains
This old stone barn used to have its red tile roof, so common in Portugal and Southern Europe. That is until it sucumbed to the weight of the years. In the background, the Caramulo Mountains.
