Póvoa da Pégada

Quando eu era criança, as ruas da minha pequena aldeia não tinham nome. O Carteiro sabia os nomes de todos os habitantes. Hoje, as ruas já têem o seu devido nome. Esta é a Rua do Tojal como ela aparecia até há cerca de quinze anos. Desde então, a nova estrada permite a circulação de carros nos dois sentidos.

When I was a child, the streets in my little village had no name. The Postman knew everybody's name. Now they do have names and this one is Rua (Street) of Tojal as it appeared until about 15 years ago. It is now a two-lane road.

This drawing resulted from a walk through the streets of Alfama (one of the oldest neighborhoods in Lisbon) during a 1989 trip to Portugal. I hope to go on a return visit soon.

Ciudad Rodrigo

Ciudad Rodrigo fica na estrada entre Vilar Formoso na fronteira Portuguesa, e Salamanca em Espanha. A catedral no topo da colina é o centro dum conjunto arquitectónico muito belo e muito bem preservado. Ao fundo da colina, o Rio Águeda corre por baixo de uma pitoresca ponte romana - talvez uma futura aguarela.

Ciudad Rodrigo sits on the road from the Portuguese border to the city of Salamanca in Spain. The hilltop Cathedral is the center of a beautiful area of old arquitecture, very well preserved. At the bottom of the hill, the Águeda River flows under a Roman Bridge - maybe a future watercolor project.
