Porta do Soar

Eu confesso que sou um pouco impaciente para acabar pinturas numa só sessão especialmente em noites de Segunda Feira (ou de Terça, Quarta, etc…).
Então as pinturas que faço durante a semana de trabalho são normalmente mais pequenas e rápidas. O que em aguarela não é necessáriamente detrimente. Esta mostra o lado sul da Porta do Soar em Viseu.

I admit I am a little impatient and like to finish a painting in a single session, especially on weeknights. So these tend to be smaller and quicker, which in watercolor is not necessarily bad. This one shows the South side of Porta (Gate) of Soar, a remnant of the old medieval walls in Viseu, Northern Portugal.

Today, I was rummaging through some photos from some years ago, and I found a scene that made me grab the brush. This is a quick sketch that I clocked at 34 minutes, a little record for me. Some times…rarely for me…speed lends a little freshness and spontaneity, which I think worked in this case.

Hoje estava a vasculhar umas fotos de alguns anos atrás e encontrei um recanto que me fez sacar do pincel. Este é um rápido esboço que foi cronometrado em 34 minutos, um pequeno recorde para mim. Por vezes…raras comigo…a rapidez empresta um pouco de limpidez e espontaneidade, o que eu penso que aconteceu neste caso.

Projecto Familiar - Joint Venture

Este pequeno trabalho foi um projecto cooperativo entre eu e a minha esposa que não quer admitir o seu óbvio talento para o desenho e pintura. Aliás, o meu papel aqui foi muito limitado a umas sombras nas flores em primeiro plano. Ela foi a autora de tudo o resto.

This small drawing was a joint-venture between me and my wife who refuses to acknowledge her obvious talent for drawing and painting. Actually, my role was very limited to some shadows in the foreground flowers. She did everything else.

Ribeira de Beijós

Durante a minha visita a Portugal no ano passado tive a oportunidade de passar por muitos recantos de Beijós aonde não passava há muito tempo. Este foi um deles. Nessa altura o caudal da Ribeira estava muito anémico. Então eu tomei a liberdade de inventar uma Ribeira mais robusta, como ela deve parecer no Inverno.

During my visit to Portugal last year I had the chance to visit certain spots in Beijós for the first time in several years. This was one of them. At the time the flow of the Ribeira (Creek) was very anemic. So, I took the liberty to imagine how this creek might look in the winter, with a more robust flow.

Estamos agora no coração de Viseu, onde o Sol por vezes se esforça muito para entrar nestas estreitas ruas. Eu adoro especialmente esta cidade.

We are in the heart of Viseu where the Sun sometimes struggles to show up in these narrow alleys. I love this town.
