Pardieiros

Este recanto da aldeia de Pardieiros na Beira Alta foi pintado a partir de uma sugestão dum leitor Pardieirense. Como eu não tinha um foto adequada, tomei a liberdade de roubar uma no Beijós-Cinco-Aldeias. Adicionei alguns detalhes (pessoas) e subtraí outros (tais como fios eléctricos). Obrigado ao leitor, ao Willoughby e ao Pardieirosonline.

This spot in the village of Pardieiros, Beira Alta was painted at the suggestion of a local resident. As I had no suitable photo, I borrowed one from Beijós-Cinco-Aldeias. I added some details (people) and removed others (such as electrical wires). My thanks for the suggestion, to Willoughby and to Pardieirosonline.

Serra do Caramulo

Esta vista tornou-se possível devido a um fogo florestal que dizimou os pinheiros que antes a ocultavam. Com um pouco de sorte, em poucos anos os pinheiros voltarão. Penso que a longínqua povoação é Tondela.

This sight came to be because a forest fire destroyed the pine trees that used to hide it. With a little luck, the pines will be back in a few years. The barely visible village in the far distance is probably Tondela.

Chuva em Serpa

Continuando pelo Alentejo, estamos agora mais perto da vila de Serpa onde a chuva – normalmente escassa - está a caír.

Continuing through Alentejo, we are now closer to the village of Serpa where the rain – normally scarce – is now falling.

Monte Alentejano

Este Monte Alentejano tem um significado especial por qualquer razão…fica situado perto da belíssima vila de Serpa. Á direita avista-se o forno para confecionar o bom pão Alentejano.

This “Monte” or “Hill” meaning a typical homestead in the Province of Alentejo, traditionally on a hill, has a special meaning for some reason…it is located near the utterly beautiful village of Serpa. On the right we can see the country wood oven used to bake the great local bread.

Neve em Casteição

Com a devida vénia, esta aguarela nasceu a partir desta bela foto e retrata uma perspectiva da Aldeia de Casteição, na Beira Interior. A julgar pelas fotografias da Mara, a Aldeia é um lugar extremamente pitoresco e está na minha lista de futuros destinos a visitar.

This watercolor was born from this beautiful photo and depicts one view of the village of Casteição in Northern Portugal. Judging from Mara’s work, this is one picturesque place which is on my list of future destinations to visit.

Capela dos Milagres

A Capela da Nossa Senhora dos Milagres em Laceiras na Beira Alta data de 1680 e tem a sua festa anual a 15 de Agosto. Desta vez fiz um desenho preliminar a lápis para planear as areas claras e escuras.

This Chapel of Our Lady of Miracles in Beira Alta dates from 1680 and has an annual pilgrimage every August 15th. This time I did a quick pencil sketch to help plan the lights and darks.

Coimbra

Um fado diz que Coimbra tem mais encanto na hora da despedida. Concordo plenamente tendo lá passado quatro anos há muito tempo. Tomei coragem para tentar uma cena nocturna desta vez.

A song says that Coimbra is even more enchanting when the time comes to leave. I could not agree more having spent four years there a long time ago. I ventured to try a night scene this time.

Cabanas de Viriato

Penso que esta se chama Rua da Lavandeira, por certo devido ao enorme tanque que antes era usado para lavar roupa á sombra do chorão. O casarão amarelo domina a cena que felizmente não mudou muito nas últimas três ou quatro décadas.

This street in Cabanas de Viriato is named after the large water cistern that was used by local women to wash their laundry. The large yellow mansard towers over the scene which fortunately has not changed much in the last three or four decades.

Bairro dos Moleiros 2

Continuando a nossa viagem pelo Bairro dos Moleiros, esta casa fica do lado oposto da velha rua em frente daquela que aparece na postagem anterior e em similar estado de ruína. Olhando pelo lado melhor das coisas, os campos que rodeiam esta área, regados pela Ribeira de Beijós, parecem estar bem cultivados…ou pelo menos, menos abandonados.

Continuing our hike through “Miller’s Borough”, this house sits across the old street from the one depicted in the previous post, and in similar stage of ruin. On the bright side, the surrounding fields near the Beijós Creek, seem well cared for and cultivated.

Bairro dos Moleiros 1

Continuando pela mesma estrada, cá cheguei ao Bairro dos Moleiros (ou o Bairro do Moleiro Novo). Uma das casas em mais degradado estado, esta cativou-me especialmente a atenção e fez-me pensar nas inúmeras cenas familiares que aqui terão possivelmente tomado lugar.
Neste pequeno trabalho procurei dar mais destaque ao lápis do que á aguarela.

Down the same road I came to the Bairro dos Moleiros or “Miller’s Borough” for the water mills along the creek. This is one of the most degradated houses which made me think of all the family scenes that may have taken place here. In this small sketch I tried to emphasize the pencil more so than the watercolor washes.

Estrada dos Moleiros

Pelo menos esse é o nome que eu antes lhe dei por não saber o nome verdadeiro (Estrada da Ribeira). O que eu sei é que esta estrada rural me levou a visitar o Bairro dos Moleiros, um grupo de casas e azenhas abandonadas junto á Ribeira de Beijós. A beleza do local levou-me tirar muitas fotografias que irei usar no futuro para guiar um pincel. Agradeço ao Willoughby e a CPM pelas direcções.

At least that is the name I gave this back road, not knowing its true name. It took me to a beautiful abandoned neighborhood of old farm houses and water mills. I took many photos and I want to use some of them to guide a paintbrush. I thank Willoughby and CPM for the directions.

Portel, Alentejo

Castelo de Óbidos

Óbidos é difícil de descrever sem a tentação de usar hipérbole. A vila parece quase demasiado perfeita para os sentidos. Este castelo domina o conjunto de casas tradicionais belamente caiadas e devidamente protegidas pela tão bem preservada muralha medieval.

Óbidos is difficult to describe without the temptation to use hiperbole. The village almost seems too perfect for the senses. This castle towers over the traditional whitewashed houses huddling within the well preserved medieval walls.

O meu novo Moleskine!

Recentemente o meu irmão enviou-me mais uma caixa cheia de coisas boas tais como bacalhau, chouriça, queijo da serra, etc…coisas que são impossíveis de encontrar aqui em Memphis. Como se isso não fosse suficiente, desta vez ele incluiu dois cadernos de desenho Moleskine, uma marca de longa e distinta tradição na Europa. Aqui ficam agradecimentos redrobrados.

Recently my dear brother sent me another care package bursting with good portuguese treats like Bacalhau (dried cod fish), Portuguese sausage, goat cheese etc…stuff I can’t find here in Memphis. As if this was not enough, this time he included two Moleskine sketchbooks which have a long and distinguished tradition in Europe. My great thanks for this great gift.

Lugar de Além, Beijós

O Lugar de Além é um bairro da Aldeia de Beijós na Beira Alta, a sede da Freguesia onde nasci. A aldeia fica localizada num vale muito fértil e vêem-se muitos campos cultivados. Esta é uma perspectiva que se pode apreciar vista do Alto da Cadina.

Guarda-Além is a neighborhood in the village of Beijós in Northern Portugal, near where I was born. It sits in a fertile valley with many farmed fields. This view is from Alto da Cadina.

Museu do Relógio, Serpa

Serpa, no Alentejo, é uma vila muito bem preservada que transborda de paz e tranquilidade. Para não falar da excelente cozinha local. Eu recomendo as Migas feitas com o bom pão alentejano e ervas aromáticas!

Serpa in the Province of Alentejo, is a beautifully preserved town that exudes peace and tranquility. Not to mention the great local food. I definitely recommend the “Migas”, a dish based on meat and crumbled bread with aromatic herbs.

Ermida, Alentejo

O Alentejo está salpicado de antigas ermidas que nasceram de ainda mais antigas mesquitas muçulmanas. Esta aguarela foi pintada para um dos meus bons amigos Portugueses e Alentejanos, aqui em Memphis (onde os Portugueses escassam).

The Province of Alentejo has many scattered Chapels that were converted from old Arab Mosques dating from hundreds of years ago when the Iberian Peninsula was occupied by the Moors. This was painted for a local Portuguese friend here in Memphis where you can count the Portuguese community with the fingers of your hand.

Almedina

Bem, esta é a segunda tentativa que faço para retratar esta cena na alta de Coimbra perto da Sé Velha. Não gosto de pintar a mesma coisa mais do que uma vez, mas como não fiquei lá muito satisfeito com a primeira, aqui está a segunda. Penso que ficou um pouco menos má.

This is my second try at this scene in Coimbra, my old college town. I don’t like to paint the same thing twice, but I was not too happy with the first try. I like this a one a little better.

Póvoa

Ah… de volta ás minhas orígens, á minha infância! Esta vetusta casa na Póvoa da Pégada data do Século XVIII e eu tive o grande previlégio de lá ter vivido a minha juventude. Na “Regada” regava o milho e queixava-me da pele queimada não só pelas folhas dessa planta mas também pelas folhas das abóboras que mais abrasivas eram ainda. No entanto, este lugar era o centro do mundo para mim e era o único lugar onde encontrava a paz interior. A velha oliveira sucumbiu á nova estrada. Mas encontrei a Casa belamente restaurada e espero voltar a vê-la no próximo ano.

Ah…back to my origins, to my childhood! This old house dates from the Eighteenth Century and I was previleged to have grown up here. I used to water the corn and complain about the skin rashes from that plant, but especially from the pumpkin plants scattered in the middle. Nevertheless, this was the center of my world, the only place where I would find inner peace. The old olive tree is gone, a victim of the new road. But I found the House beautifully restored, and I hope to come by again next year.

Por vezes, no meu esforço para eliminar detalhes eu tento pintar muito rápidamente, quase a contra-relógio. E uma vez por outra dá bom resultado. Desta vez…não deu. De qualquer maneira aqui fica para interesse didáctico. Moral da história…rápido sim..mas não excesso de velocidade.

Sometimes I try to loosen up and eliminate detail by working very fast, against the clock.
Once in a while it works. Not this time…Anyway here it is for educational purposes. Moral of the story – rush – but not too much.

Quinta das Chãs

Há uns meses vi umas fotografias desta quinta no Beijós XXI e fiquei intrigado sobre este belo lugar. Afinal, fica bem perto de onde eu, enquanto adolescente, costumava caminhar com a minha fraca espingarda de ar comprimido na minha vã esperança de apanhar uns tordos no Outono (eu penso que me lembro de os ouvir rirem-se de mim…).
Bem, este Setembro tive a fortuna de poder caminhar por estas bandas de novo e não pude resistir a passar por este lugar cheio de paz e tranquilidade.

I recently saw a photo on a favorite site of this farm in Portugal and I was taken by the scene. Turns out it is near where I used to try…in vain…to hunt birds in my teenage years with my weak BB gun. I think I remember the birds laughing at me…
In any event, this September I was fortunate enough to walk these paths again and I could not resist to come by this quiet and peaceful place.

Algarve

Este é um pequeno recanto na Quinta do Lago, um grande empreendimento turístico no Algarve. Normalmente não gosto de céus muito homogéneos, prefiro representar nuvens ou outros efeitos atmosféricos. Desta vez não resisti ao típico céu de Verão em Portugal com o seu rico azul (azul “macio” como Eça de Queiróz o descreve).
Este trabalho vem de uma fotografia que lá tirei em 1995.

This scene is in Quinta do Lago, a big resort in Algarve, Southern Portugal. Normally I prefer more atmospheric effects in the sky as opposed to even tones. In this case, I gave in and just had to try to show the typical deep blue Portuguese summer sky (soft and velvety, as described by the late great Portuguese writer, Eça de Queiróz ).
This work is based on a photo I took there in 1995.

O Patinho Feio

Quando a minha esposa pintou esta bonita cena, eu apressei-me a meter a colher no assunto. Eu disse que o ultimo pato tinha necessariamente de ser diferente pois todas as cenas familiares de patos que tenho visto assim o provam. Lá a convenci, e aqui ficamos com o patinho feio que na minha humilde opinião, é o mais bonito.

When my wife painted this beautiful scene, I had to butt in and said the last duck had to be different because that’s what I always saw in the park. She gave in and changed the little duck to the "ugly duckling"…but I think he is the star of this painting.

Tendo vivido cinco anos de escola secundária em Viseu, esta cena é muito familiar para mim. Só depois de ter saído daqui é que, claro, eu vim a dar valor á beleza desta cidade.
Esta antiga Catedral marca o centro do Centro Histórico de Viseu bem no alto da colina central..

Having lived here for five of my High School years, this is a very familiar scene to me. Only after leaving the place did I come to appreciate the beauty of this city in Beira Alta. This old Cathedral marks the center of the historic quarter on the very top of the hill.

Ponte do Mouro

Quando passei por um dos meus sítios favoritos, o “Está de Velho!” , eu vi uma fotografia que achei particularmente notável. Como eu sei que o autor da fotografia é também um autor de excepcionais aguarelas com um estilo único, eu sugeri que ele a pintasse. O amigo Paulo Mendes devolveu-me a sugestão, e eu não resisti. Aqui fica o modesto resultado.

Roaming through one of my favorite sites, "Esta' de Velho!", I came across a particularly beautiful picture. I know the photographer also paints exceptional watercolors with an unique style, so I suggested he paint the scene. He returned the suggestion to the sender, and I did not resist. Mares Tropicais - Tropical Seas

Esta aguarela não tem realmente nada a ver com coisas de arquitectura. Talvez contagiada por o meu interesse na arte em geral, e pela aguarela em particular, a minha esposa – uma carioca - têm desenvolvido nos ultimos meses um interesse pela pintura, e não há dúvida que o talento é evidente neste seu trabalho. Continuo a encorajá-la para pintar mais, mas penso que eu preciso de um pouco de ajuda.

This watercolor has nothing to do with architectural subjects of course. In the past year, my wife - a Carioca, native of tropical Rio - has developed some interest in painting. My own interest in art and watercolor has maybe, rubbed off on her a little, and I think her talent is evident in this work. I am trying to push her to keep painting, but I think I need a little help.

Porta Medieval, Óbidos

Tomei a liberdade de usar uma foto aqui no Beijós Cinco Aldeias para inspirar esta aguarela. Cada recanto em Óbidos é unico e inspirador, e este é um bom exemplo. Procurei distorcer um pouco as formas – uma pequena experiência para mim.

Each little nook and cranny in Óbidos is unique and inspiring and this is a good example.

Encontros do Rio

Esta pequena pintura foi feita de memória porque a foto que tirei nos anos setenta ficou muito escura – foi tirada já ao por do sol depois de passar lá um grande dia a pescar com o meu tio e bom amigo JCDF. Fomos lá uma única vez porque é um lugar um tanto remoto. Muitas outras vezes ía-mos pescar a lugares mais acessíveis no Rio Dão ou no Rio Mondego.
Talvez por o esforço em chegar lá, este lugar deixou-me recordações especiais. O isolamento do lugar, o fim do dia, a casa rural com o fumo a saír da chaminé, a represa na ribeira de Beijós – que logo a seguir se junta ao Rio Dão – ficaram particularmente gravados na memória. Espero que pouco tenha mudado da próxima vez que eu possa voltar aqui.

This sketch was done from memory since my foto, taken in the seventies, was too dark to show much detail. It is a remote place and maybe due to its isolation, it left strong memories from my fishing trips with my dear uncle and friend, JCDF. It is near Rio Dão, Beira Alta.

Era assim que os romanos chamavam a este “Promontório Grande” que hoje é o Cabo da Roca na ponta mais ocidental da Europa.

That's how this cape was known in Roman times. This lighthouse sits in the great Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point in Europe.

Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória

Ficando ainda no tema de monumentos Portugueses, esta aguarela mostra uma perspectiva talvez menos conhecida deste belo monumento Gótico que acabou de ser construído em 1533, 145 anos depois do início das obras. Comemora a Batalha de Aljubarrota em 1385.

Another popular Portuguese Landmark, this Gothic Abbey took 145 years to complete in 1533. It celebrates the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385 between the Portuguese forces and a far larger force from Castela (part of today’s Spain). This view is less well known than its front face seen here.

This tower sits at the mouth of the Tagus River in Lisbon, where roughly five hundred years ago Vasco da Gama set out to find just where India was.

Finalmente no Mapa

Muitas vezes a minha querida esposa zombava amigávelmente como a minha pequena terra natal nunca aparecia nos mapas. A terra dela claro, não têm essa fraqueza…ela nasceu no Rio de Janeiro. Isto aconteceu evidentemente antes de as fotos de satélite começarem a aparecer na Internet atravéz de Google ou Live Search.
Finalmente eu decidi-me a resolver o assunto e fazer o meu próprio mapa onde a Póvoa aparece em primeiro plano.
Tendo sido feito exclusivamente de memória, e sem referências digitais, a geografia está naturalmente um pouco distorcida. De qualquer maneira, eu pus ponto final nesse tópico.

My dear wife used to tease me that my tiny hometown in Portugal did not appear in any maps. Of course her hometown does not have that problem…she was born in Rio de Janeiro.
This was before detailed maps started to become available on the Internet through Google or Live Search.
Finally I decided to put the matter to rest and come up with my own map where Póvoa appears front and center. Having done it completely from memory, the geography is naturally a little distorted. Nevertheless, I did in fact put the matter to rest.

Igreja de São Cristóvão

Envolvida por velhos e enormes cedros, esta Igreja na Vila de Cabanas de Viriato remonta originalmente ao século XIII. Fica muito perto da mansão agora trágicamente arruinada, do diplomata Aristides de Sousa Mendes que pagou bem caro pela sua humanidade. Ele foi castigado por ignorar ordens e conceder vistos de entrada a Judeus que procuravam fugir á perseguição Nazi.

Surrounded by old cedar trees, this Church in the village of Cabanas de Viriato dates originally to the Thirteenth Century. It is near the now ruined mansion built by Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the late diplomat who paid a heavy price for ignoring orders and giving entry visas to Jews fleeing the Nazis.
